Have you seen the commercials for Disney's Give a Day, Get a Disney Day program? Right now Disney is giving away a free one day ticket to their parks to anyone who volunteers 8 hours worth of service with one of their certified volunteer programs. So the kids and I decided this would be a great way to give service and get to go to Disneyland for free. What you do is go to www.disneyparks.com and register your family (the kids have to be at least 6 years old to participate) and then put in your address and they will show you links to all of the participating charitable organizations in your area. We decided to work with Karing For Kids, a local organization that collects handmade blankets to sell to raise money for kids with diabetes and cancer. The best part about this was that we could do all of the work from home. I went through my fabric stash and found some fabric that I'd had forever and wasn't planning on using, and made two quilts that way, and then made two more out of cheap flannel from JoAnn's. All in all I bet we made the 4 twin sized quilts for about $30, not bad for a trip to Disneyland for a family of four. But if you want to take advantage of this you have to hurry because they are only doing this for the first 1 million people to register. You can use the tickets up until the end of 2010, there are a few black out dates, but I didn't think there were too many.
It was fun to have my kids "help." The whole time Dallas kept saying, "this is a great idea Mom, we should really do this more often, it's really for the good of will Mom. " I thought it was cute and didn't correct him. Who knows, maybe Will could use some good these days.
